College cheerleaders are at risk for eating disorders, according to a new study by  Toni Torres-McGehee, an assistant professor of athletic training at South Carolina.

This story about college cheerleaders and eating disorders has received a significant amount of press, including an article in the September 27, 2010 issue of Sports Illustrated.

The study, which analyzed cheerleader data from 136 Division I and Division II colleges, said that one-third of college cheerleaders may be developing eating disorders.  According to Torres-McGehee, those colleges that have their cheerleaders adorned in belly-baring midriffs are even more likely to have eating disorders. 

The NCAA does not govern college cheerleading so no action will be taken by the organization, but cheerleaders at USC are now subject to tests to determine if they may have or may be developing eating disorders due to the bare midriff uniforms.

We decided to check things out and the 2010 South Carolina cheerleaders are thankfully still wearing bare midriff uniforms.
