Tumbling Around

I teach a beginners’ gymnastics class for 4- to 5-year-olds. Thank goodness, I have an assistant that helps me or else I don’t think that I’d be able to handle all of those little ones!

As a mom of a former gymnast turned cheerleader, I learned the importance of safety and proper strength when it came to kids doing gymnastics. I started off my daughter young so she was used to tumbling before she decided to cheer on competition squads. However, I saw a lot of moms try to force their daughters into learning how to tumble overnight so they could make squads or complete more impressive competition routines.

As a gymnastics teacher I encourage parents to learn more about the sport and it’s difficulty so they won’t expect their kids to perform these feats without the proper training and skills. But it’s more worrisome watching out for these young kids’ safety and keeping them in line during the class. I have to be very attentive, so that when I noticed a while back that I was having trouble hearing some students, I looked up hearing aid reviews and got some hearing aides that stay put while I’m demonstrating tumbling skills.

I don’t think my students have noticed them. But what’s most important is that I’m able to keep up with them more.
